Twist of Fate

The phone rang and her breath caught when she saw who it was. She pressed her hand to her chest, forced her synapses to shut up for a second, then pressed Talk. “Hey, are we still on for tomorrow?”

He cleared his throat, a soft rumble that made her heart stutter. “There’s been a change of plans.”

What? Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. “What’s up?”

“Well,” he paused.

Did that pause mean something? Was he wishing he never agreed to get their friends to go out dancing? Was he trying to get out of this without hurting her feelings?

“It’s just going to be us. Is that okay?”

Heat flooded her cheeks. “Oh, yeah. That’s cool.”

He cleared his throat again. “So I’ll pick you up around 7?”

“Great, see you then.”

Does that mean it’s a date? They’d known each other for years and never had a date, but she’d liked him that whole time. Did he think it was a date? How was she going to get through the next 24 hours without knowing?

One week later, on their second date (or their first official date since the week before was really a non-date:

Six years and counting…

  1. Congratulations on six years, Mel.

Yes. It was a date. If he’d met you there and no one else showed it wouldn’t have been, but picking you up at 7 is a date. :)

    • I know that NOW. :P At the time I spent those entire 24 hours telling everyone about my non-date and wondering what it could mean.

  2. Congrats on six years, Mel.

  3. That is SO sweet. Sigh. :-)

    Congrats!

  4. Yay for you guys! :D

  6. too cute! congrats :D

  7. Happy six, Melanie and Ibis!

I love that picture. It gives me the feeling you’re trying to be cool while inwardly screaming, “We’re touching! We’re touching!” I could be wrong, though. Often am. ; )

Regardless, happy anniversary. You look perfect together.

    • LOL! Actually, we’d been dancing together for four years at that point so the touching wasn’t new. :P

  8. Awww! How sweet! Happy sixth!

Okay, since we seem to be playing the guess-what-Melanie-and-Ibis-are-thinking game, I’m going to go with Ibis thinking, “Hah, cool. I’ve got this awesome girl on a date with me! Finally! She rocks!” And I’m guessing you’re thinking, “I’m playing it cool. Playing it cool. Squeee! Oh, no squee. Cool.”

    • lol, you guys are funny. He was probably more stressed that almost no one was dancing and there was someone taking our picture, while I was trying not to step on his heels.

  9. congrats on six years! That’s so great :-)

  10. Happy Anniversary!! Yay for 6 years!! I

  11. Thanks everyone! Unfortunately we weren’t able to talk today. We have a small window at my lunch break and he had to leave sooner than I realized. :( Tomorrow’s another day.

  12. Awww! A dataversary! I hope many more dates together are in your future.

  13. Natasha, you hit the nail right on the head and just so that everyone knows. I wanted the date without the pressure, so I convinced myself it wasn’t and Mel missed the part where I invited a friend along (he was the best man) to make it easier on ourselves that night and as soon as he knew I was ok he knew he had to leave. Thanks Andy.
    Happy anniversary honey.

    • I can’t believe I forgot to mention Andy! I told some friends that part of it last night. That’s the best part!

  14. Was this at the Fiesta for Literacy? I miss that yearly event! Especially when it was at Hothouse. ;)

    • Lisa, it was! That was in 2004 and I think it was the last year they did it, right?

  15. Awww… So sweet. The picture is awesome! Congratulations!
